The arrival
of a vessel in the Waitemata was quite an event at the time. Many
a wife or family member took lodging in the beautiful old Guest
house at number 4 Shelly Beach Road.
This was to await the flag signals on top of Mount Victoria Flagstaff
announcing the arrival of a vessel from the home country with loved
ones. These beautiful sailing ships also very importantly brought
news to the new immigrants of Auckland. Its port and associated
businesses would also eagerly watch for the descriptions notified
on Mt Victoria's flagstaff. Reporters of this time would hire brave
watermen or boatmen to get them onboard in sometimes atrocious conditions
so they could get the latest news to print for the next mornings
paper.
If you have
notes on any vessels and would like to be considered for inclusion
in this website, please
e-mail.
